5-Hour: Demystifying The Yoga Sūtras

A 5-Week Course on The Yoga Sūtras of Patanjali

This 5-hour program is for both yoga teachers and any practitioners looking for a dedicated space for self-study.

Over the course of 5-weeks, we will be exploring a number of yoga sūtras in depth to deconstruct the roots of our stress, witness the mechanics of our habits, and discuss the practical tools for lasting mental clarity for your day-to-day.

Using B.K.S. Iyengar’s classic commentary as our guide, we will study in a traditional "satsang" setting - gathering of like-minded community - to study the nature of consciousness.

Classes will take place in the yoga shala in our home, with herbal tea and comfies :)

Curriculum:

  • Focus: Defining the Goal of Practice

Before we can shift the mind, we must understand what it is. In our opening session, we explore Patañjali’s classic definition of yoga: the process of stilling the "mental ripples" that distort our perception. We will learn to distinguish between the "Seer" (our true self) and the "seen" (our passing thoughts), setting the foundation for a life lived with greater clarity and less reactivity.

  • Focus: The Five Kleśas

Why is it so hard to stay peaceful? This week, we perform a "psychological audit" using the Yoga Sūtras' map of human suffering. We deconstruct the five Kleśas - the habitual colorings of the mind like ego, attachment, and fear - that cloud our vision. By identifying these roots, we learn how to thin them out before they become dominant patterns in our daily lives.

  • Focus: Kriyā Yoga

Philosophy is only as valuable as its application. Week 3 focuses on the "Yoga of Action," a three-part framework designed for people living in the modern world. We explore how to balance self-discipline, deep self-inquiry, and the grace of surrender to transform our daily activities into a path of spiritual growth.

  • Focus: Effort & Ease

B.K.S. Iyengar taught that a bird needs two wings to fly. This week, we explore the vital balance between Abhyāsa (steadfast effort) and Vairāgya (the art of letting go). We will discuss how to show up fully for our lives and our practice without becoming "owned" by the results, discovering the sweet spot where discipline meets freedom.

  • Focus: The Eight Limbs

In our final session, we integrate our study into a holistic "master map." We explore the Eight Limbs of Yoga not as a linear ladder, but as a single organic tree. From our external ethics and physical health to the internal depths of concentration and meditation, we see how every aspect of our lives can be woven into a state of unity and peace.
